Eastern University College of Arts
and Sciences
Welcome to the webpage of Eastern University and the College of Arts and Sciences! Here in CAS you will find dedicated faculty with a passion for exploring what it means to be faithful to Christ while investigating the life of the mind and the possibilities of the heart. Faith, reason, justice – our faculty are invigorated by these ideas and seek to understand the connections.
What does it mean to be a chemist who honors God? It involves more than evangelism or being honest in the lab – it means seeing all of one’s life, service, and science as under Christ’s lordship. What does it mean to study economics or history from a Christian perspective? It means not compromising economics or history but rather, seeking to understand academics in light of such concepts as stewardship, resources, cause and effect, responsibility, and shalom – the biblical idea for “peace.” Come sit with our faculty and ask them your tough questions. They want you to grow personally, academically, and spiritually. They want to hear your story and how they can come alongside you and learn with you.
The College of Arts and Sciences at Eastern University maintains a student-to-faculty ratio of 15 to 1. Small class sizes mean personal attention for all of our students. In addition, students are not taught by graduate students, as you would find at large universities, but rather, fully qualified professors. Our faculty care a great deal about students’ whole lives. Much learning, therefore, takes place outside of the classroom. We encourage you to come to Eastern with the perspective that all of life on campus is “real life”—presenting to you opportunities in and out of the classroom to grow, to use your talents, and to explore the promises of Christ.
In the U.S. today, much attention is given to developing professional skills and job preparation, especially in light of a challenging economy. Here in Eastern’s College of Arts and Sciences, we take job preparation seriously. About 99% of our graduates are placed in jobs or graduate schools within 6 months after graduation. Equally important, we recognize that most people change jobs multiple times in their lives. So, we don’t try to train students narrowly but rather, educate and teach in light of a diverse, demanding world that calls for specific skill preparation as well as broader knowledge and aptitudes. We seek to help students understand job preparation in light of larger ideals that will sustain our graduates throughout their lives. These ideals derive from the liberal arts tradition – a tradition that emphasizes the attainment of wisdom and knowledge (not just job training), the understanding of vocation or calling, and the ability to reflect and reason. Thus we will not simply prepare you for a job—yes, we will do that—but we will also prepare you for a life of serving God and your neighbor, of bringing needed change and reconciliation to this world. We want to help you develop the capacities needed to continue to grow and to be effective in our diverse, needy, ever-changing world.
Join us on this exciting journey. Come learn what it means to learn and grow from a Christian perspective, from Christian faculty. Discover how exploring faith, reason, and justice can energize your own life as you study at Eastern.
