What does it mean to thrive in college? Are Eastern students thriving?
The Thriving Quotient™ (TQ) is a survey developed by Dr. Laurie Schreiner, out of Azusa Pacific University, to help us measure student thriving. Thriving is defined as getting the most out of the college experience, so that students are intellectually, socially and psychologically engaged and enjoying the college experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Thriving Quotient has 5 scales:
- Engaged Learning (a measure of the degree to which students are meaningfully processing what happens in class, energized by what they are learning, and continuing to think about it outside of class)
- Academic Determination (a measure of students’ goal-directedness, investment of effort, and regulation of their own learning and use of time)
- Positive Perspective (a measure of students’ optimism, and explanatory style)
- Social Connectedness (a measure of students’ involvement in healthy relationships and social support networks, whether on or off campus)
- Diverse Citizenship (a measure of students’ desire to make a difference in the community around them, as well as their openness to differences in others)
Outcome variables, such as intent to graduate, perception of tuition as a worthwhile investment, and institutional fit are included.
The “purpose is to identify the campus experiences that are most predictive of students gaining optimal benefits from their college experience—being fully engaged intellectually, socially, and psychologically. Knowing which aspects of the campus experience contribute most to thriving will enable institutions to design programs and services that are tailored to meet the needs of their students most effectively.” (Adapted from http://www.thrivingincollege.org/the-thriving-quotient/)
All students across all academic levels at Eastern University (including Esperanza and Palmer).
October 26 through November 13, 2020.
An invitation with a link to the survey unique to each Eastern Student was sent to each Eastern student’s eastern.edu email.
The results of this survey will help Eastern to design programs and services that are tailored to meet the needs of students most effectively. Aggregate results will be shared across campus including groups such as the Leadership Team, Deans, Department Heads and Student Government.
