Timothy J. Brown

Dean, College of Arts and Humanities


Timothy J. Brown, Ph.D. is the Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, and a Professor of Communication Studies.  He has over 20 years of leadership experience spanning public and private, four-year and two-year institutions.  Dr. Brown is a rhetorical scholar whose research, teaching, and consulting focus on the intersection of culture, communication, and identity.  He has over 20 publications and has made more than 100 presentations in his discipline and to various professional/community groups.  In his award winning book, No One Cheers for Goliath, he shares his servant-leadership approach of serving God and not man to chronicle his journey as a first generation African American college student to academic dean. 

Prior to Eastern, Dr. Brown served as Dean of the Liberal Arts at Montgomery County Community College which was the College’s largest Division and before Montco, he served three years as the Dean of the James L. Knight School of Communication at Queens University of Charlotte.  At Queens, he oversaw a $5 million endowment that funded the digital literacy project, Digital Charlotte, and the establishment of the Queens University News Service (where students created content for various Charlotte media).  Previous to Queens University, he was a faculty member at West Chester University of Pennsylvania (WCU) where he chaired the Department of Communication Studies for ten years and served in many leadership roles such as Special Assistant to the Provost, Chair of the Space Allocation Committee, Chair of the Council of Chairs, Co-Chair of the Multicultural Faculty Commission, and Co-Founder of the Faculty Mentoring Program. Before WCU, he was a faculty member at Buffalo State College. 

On the national level, Dr. Brown has been a motivational speaker and workshop presenter on leadership skills for the Federal Government’s Leadership Assessment Program and a Team Leader for the National Communication Association’s Learning Outcomes in Communication Project.  In addition, he is a recurring presenter for The Network for Educational Excellence in Equity (3E Network), that provides professional development for N.J. public school teachers.  Among his many honors includes being named a Distinguished Teaching Fellow and a Distinguished Research Fellow by the Eastern Communication Association.  He received his B.A. and M.A. in Communication Studies from West Chester University and his Ph.D. in Rhetoric from Ohio University.
