As Pre-Dental students, you must start planning early by setting out the right course of action geared toward your career goals. As with medical schools, dental schools do not require that you choose a specific college major. Therefore, no matter which major you choose, you need to take the following courses (preferably by the end of the junior year) to prepare yourself for admission:
- English: a semester of composition and a semester of literature (ENGL 102 and ENGL literature)
- Chemistry (including labs): a year of General Chemistry (start in freshman year, CHEM 121, 122, 123, 124) and a year of Organic Chemistry (CHEM 211, 212, 213, 214)
- Physics (including labs): one year (PHYS 101, 102) (Calculus I (MATH 160) is a prerequisite)
- Biology (including labs): one year (i.e. BIOL 151, 152, or other biology or non-biology major)
Note also that some schools have additional requirements. These courses may typically include:
- BIOL 216 - Microbiology
- CHEM 320, 322 - Biochemistry I and Lab
- BIOL 233, 234 - Anatomy and Physiology I and II
- MATH 220 - Statistics
- MATH 161 - Calculus II
- PSYCH - psychology course
Be sure to investigate those schools you are interested in to ensure that you will satisfy their prerequisites.
