Educational requirements to become a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) vary from state to state. Our program offers track options to assist with the different educational requirements. Your Enrollment Counselor can help you navigate which track is right for your state. In the meantime, if you haven’t applied to the program as a whole yet, you can go ahead and do so!
Which Track is Right for Me?
I. Standard Track
- The Standard Track applies to students who live in Pennsylvania and states which have similar educational requirements for licensure to Pennsylvania.
- The length of the Standard Track is 60 credits.
II. State Customization Track
This track applies to:
- States where students need practicum requirements, such as clinical hours, beyond what is included in the standard track.
- States where students need practicum credits beyond what is included in the Standard Track, and/or
- States where students need coursework beyond what is included in the Standard Track.
The length of the State Customization Track ranges from 60-69 credits. During the application process, students will receive guidance as to the number of credits needed to fulfill licensure requirements in their state.
- Some students may only need to take 60 credits, but still need the State Customization Track instead of the Standard Track because their state requires more clinical hours (not credit hours) of practicum than the Standard Track.
- For states that require additional credits, the additional 1-9 credits in the State Customization Track are offered as electives so students can do what is needed for their state requirements.

III. Post-License Track
- This track is for students who are already licensed marriage and family therapists. This track is also for licensed professional counselors and licensed clinical social workers who are not obtaining a license as a marriage and family therapist.
- Students who choose this track already have a license to practice and are not using Eastern’s program in order to obtain a license as a marriage and family therapist.
- Length = 60 credits. This track follows the same program of study, number of credits, and requirements as the Standard Track.
