Why Minor in Bioethics and Medical Humanities at Eastern?

As embodied humans, we must all reckon with the experience of illness and treatment and consider what it means to live well in the face of human dependency. While the questions considered in the Bioethics and Medical Humanities minor will be fruitful for anyone, the minor is especially critical for future practitioners in health-related fields, where the skills gained are required for just, effective, and compassionate care.

Bioethics provides a framework for assessing the moral dimensions of biomedical research and practice, while Medical Humanities cultivates the narrative competence required for contextualizing patients' stories and heightening perceptual acuity.

Students go on to apply their expertise in clinical practice, research, administration, personnel management, ethics committees for hospitals and other institutions, technician work, data analysis, law, and chaplaincy. This minor complements majors such as pre-Med, Health Science, Biology, Nursing, Social Work, pre-Law, Data Science, Theology, Ministry, English, Business, and Philosophy.
