St. Davids, PA: Eastern University is excited to announce it is now offering a 100% online Doctor of Marriage and Family Therapy and a PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy. The new programs are built on the success of Eastern’s prior hybrid doctoral programs in Marriage and Family Therapy, but are designed to meet the growing demand for 100% online offerings.
Eastern’s thoughtfully-designed programs are curated for those looking to expand their hearts and minds while developing skills to meet the unique challenges of counseling theories and practice in today’s world.
Both degree programs are 60 credits and include courses in the theology of marriage and family therapy, couples therapy, trauma and family systems, diversity issues, holistic approaches, professional ethics, and more. To qualify for the program, students must have completed a master’s degree in a related field and have at least 6 graduate credits in human development across the lifespan.
The DMFT and PhD in MFT overlap in coursework in some areas but offer students the opportunity to choose different focus areas and applications, depending on which program they select. The DMFT is more clinical and ends with a doctoral project, while the PhD takes a more research-focused approach with the final assignment being a dissertation. It is crucial for students to think about exactly what they want to accomplish through the program before choosing a path.

The mission of these programs is to train students in professional mental health and pastoral counseling fields to be skilled practitioners promoting change and growth in their communities. Graduates will leave their programs prepared for leadership roles in academia, research, behavioral healthcare, pastoral care, and more.
