Eastern 's Dr. Kimberlee Johnson Inducted into Collegium of Scholars

Eastern University celebrates the induction of Dr. Kimberlee A. Johnson, Dean of Palmer Theological Seminary and Palmer College, into the Martin Luther King Jr. Collegium of Scholars for 2026. Dr. Johnson was recognized during the 41st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. College of Ministers & Laity at Morehouse College on April 9 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Each year, the Collegium honors a prestigious group of academics, professionals, and thought leaders who show remarkable accomplishment, moral leadership, and dedication to social impact in their work and lives. Inductees are nominated and evaluated based on their demonstration of great achievement in their field and commitment to society, the planet, and ethical, cosmopolitan principles. Dr. Johnson’s tireless work at the intersection of Christian faith, criminal justice reform, and higher education has earned her this achievement.

“Being recognized by the MLK Jr. Collegium of Scholars is a tremendous and humbling honor,” shared Dr. Johnson. “I feel blessed to be recognized for years of labor devoted to two of my passions, education and justice. This honor strengthens my faith and renews my commitment to challenge systems, shape future leaders, and carry forward Dr. King’s mission of building a community that truly cares for one another.”

Twenty-one members of the King family were among the notable guests at the occasion. Bernice A. King, along with other family members, was honored with portraits that will hang in the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, recognizing their ongoing dedication to advancing MLK’s mission of social justice and peace.

Senator Rev. Raphael Warnock of Ebenezer Baptist Church, a Morehouse alumnus, gave a moving keynote speech based on the biblical account of Elisha in 2 King 13:15–18, addressing faith, leadership, and tenacity, as well as recognizing the founding Dean of the MLK Jr. International Chapel, Rev. Dr. Lawrence Edward Carter, Sr., ahead of his retirement.

Dr. Johnson’s influence at Palmer Seminary and College and across the Eastern community is reflected in this honor. Her induction into the Collegium of Scholars places her among leaders committed to carrying forward Dr. King’s legacy through teaching, service, and leadership. Eastern University is proud to celebrate this recognition of her work and impact.
